Connection to St. Francis Xavier: Parishioner

Hugh Gainer

My wife Anna and I are active at SFX, and our son and his family are also parishioners. The liturgy at SFX is beautiful and meaningful. I attend daily morning mass in the chapel, and it starts my day off on the right track. We are blessed to have engaged and devoted priests serving us.

Why do you believe St. Francis Xavier is important to Mountain Brook and the surrounding communities?

We stand as a beacon on a hill as a testament to our Catholic faith and God’s love for our community and the wider world. Our Hispanic ministry is an example of God’s love for all people and His welcoming posture.

We have so many varied ministries like PSR, the School, St. Vincent de Paul, Knights of Columbus, groups for women, men, young and old. There is something for everyone and each has its own Catholic identity. The devotion of the Hispanic community to Mother Church humbles me.

The buildings in Phase One have not had any major improvements in forty to fifty years. This gives us the opportunity to address these issues now and not leaving them for others.

The Educational Building does not have any handicapped accessible restrooms or an elevator. The classrooms were designed with 1950’s instructional ideas we know how technology has changed since then. They make it work but we could do better. The parish hall looks tired and outdated. We need something we can be proud to show our friends.

We will all benefit in some way from the improvements planned for Phase One. The Parish Hall is used by most everyone and it is overdue for an upgrade. The Educational Building is used by all parishioners who have school aged children for PSR or enrollment in SFX School.

It is our time to step up and add to the legacy other have left for us.

Doing nothing is not an option.
